Chick What?!

So after pondering all weekend over what topic to blog about–I just couldn’t seem to stray away from ChickLit.

So- I will be trying to blog about the true definition of “ChickLit”, who the readers really are, authors’ motivations, and why ChickLit is becoming so popular. In doing this, I want to include some movie and tv reviews as well as take a look at the nature of certain television channels including Lifetime and TLC. I also would like to do a little bit of research on the cover illustratons of those books that are included in the “ChickLit” genre.

So far I have been able to subscribe to various ChickLit authors’ blogs through Google’s Blog Search and I will continue to search for articles about this ‘new’ literature genre for women.

    Kelly-

I like your topic. I think it will be interesting to see what you find. Like Dr. Rozema had said in class, the problem parents/teachers are having with ChicLit is that most of them revolve around drama and being popular. However, I don’t know if I can see it really affecting many young girls’ attitudes about school or life. Maybe I’m wrong. I also think it’s interesting that you’re going to try to tie in LifeTime and TLC. I love TLC—it was the only channel I watched when I was in high school. Again, I think TLC and ChicLit share in common the idea of giving young girls drama that is entertaining. My own hypothesis of why ChicLit is so important is because it gives adolescent girls the chance to experience the same life they have (maybe slightly “glammed up”), but with the actions they would never do or words they’d never say. They can escape to a book where they (whatever character they identify with) are the star of the show and everyone likes them (popularity again).

It might even be interesting to think where ChicLit has sort of evolved from. I know when I was in elementary school, my friends and I were obsessed with The Baby-Sitter’s Club series. We pretended to be different characters and even made our own version of the club. I think today’s ChicLit is a little different, but Baby-Sitter’s Club seems to have the same elements of drama among females.

Good luck with your research and blogging, I look forward to reading what you find!

    Kelly,

This is a fine start. Your topic–chick lit–should yield enough articles, particularly if you search for RSS feeds from book reviews. Be sure to identify which feeds you’ll use to inform your writing and thinking on this topic.

On the technical side of things, your blog looks good, though you still need RSS syndication and a link to Google Reader. In the sidebar widget manager, drag the “meta” box into the sidebar, and that should give you RSS syndication.

    Nice job so far.

Bush goes ballistic about other countries being evil and dangerous, because they have weapons of mass destruction. But, he insists on building up even a more deadly supply of nuclear arms right here in the US. What do you think? How does that work in a democracy again? How does being more threatening make us more likeable?Isn’t the country with
the most weapons the biggest threat to the rest of the world? When one country is the biggest threat to the rest of the world, isn’t that likely to be the most hated country?
What happened to us, people? When did we become such lemmings?
We have lost friends and influenced no one. No wonder most of the world thinks we suck. Thanks to what george bush has done to our country during the past three years, we do!
